Black Madonna – song, text, performance

Black Madonna Icon Faces

This is translated from Polish that appeared on polskatradycja.pl and titled ‘Czarna Madonna – pieśń, tekst, wykonanie’

The author of this beautiful Marian song is Alicja Gołaszewska, composer, organist and conductor. The song Black Madonna was written in 1971 and is counted among contemporary religious songs. The Black Madonna song is most often sung during pilgrimages to Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, where it was most likely written. It was this song that Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was most fond.

  1. There is a corner on this earth,
    Where everyone wants to return,
    Where Her face reigns,
On which two scars are cut.
    Hergaze is sad and troubled,
As if she wanted to ask you to place yourself
    in her maternal care.

Ref.
Madonna, Black Madonna,
How good it is to be your child!
Oh, let me, Black Madonna,
Into your arms hide!

  1. In her arms, you will find peace
    And shelter from evil,
For she has a tender heart
    for all her children.
And she will take care of you,
When you give your heart to her,
When you repeat these words to her with joy:

Ref.
Madonna, Black Madonna,
How good it is to be your child!
Oh, let me, Black Madonna,
Into your arms hide!

  1. Today, when we are surrounded by anxiety,
Where should a man take refuge,
Where should he go, if not to his Mother,
    Who will give solace?
So we beg you, O Madonna,
Set your eyes on your children
And hear us sing as we ask you:

Ref.
Madonna, Black Madonna,
How good it is to be your child!
Oh, let me, Black Madonna,
Into your arms hide!

Editors Note: In English, the following is the usually sung translation. However, it is missing the last verse, and the refrain is shorter.

There’s a corner of a country, Which the pilgrims gladly seek,
Where In glory stands a portrait of a Queen slashed on the cheek.
She is grieving, she is caring, she invites us everyone:
“I’m your Mother, be my daughter, be my son.”

Refrain:
Madonna, Oh Black Madonna,
I’m happy Your child to be!

Oh, grant me, O Black Madonna, that your arms may cradle me.
In your arms we find the refuge and the warmth of your great love.
In your arms we do find hope, joy and the strength to go through life.
In your arms is found the saviour, the Bread, the Truth, and our Way.
In your arms is found the Peace for which we search.
